Laura Chapman is an experienced intellectual property litigator who resolves complex trademark, trade dress, copyright and false advertising disputes in federal courts, before the International Trade Commission and at the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. From emergency injunctions to full trials, Laura safeguards brand equity, keeps products in the marketplace and secures rulings that position clients to grow and compete.
Beyond the courtroom, clients rely on Laura for strategic counseling that strengthens and defends brand assets. Drawing on extensive litigation experience, she develops, protects and defends trademarks and copyrights; advises on brand selection and clearance; secures U.S. and international trademark registrations; manages worldwide trademark portfolios; coordinates with foreign counsel on cross-border enforcement; resolves pre-litigation disputes involving trademark and copyright use and infringement and advises clients in registration strategy and contested proceedings before the USPTO.
Laura brings and defends trademark, trade dress, copyright, false advertising and design patent claims nationwide, through trial and appeal. Courts and tribunals have repeatedly ruled in clients’ favor after bench trials, jury trials and ITC investigations, including defeating an attempt to monopolize a major footwear category at the ITC following a weeklong trial and securing a permanent injunction after a three-week federal court trial protecting a heritage consumer brand and enabling U.S. expansion.
High-stakes, time-sensitive matters are a hallmark of Laura’s practice. After stepping in as new counsel midstream in a federal trademark case, she successfully vacated a preliminary injunction and summary judgment entered against the client, then obtained summary judgment barring a competitor’s use of the marks. In another matter, she secured an emergency stay of a preliminary injunction within days, allowing product sales to continue during a critical retail period.
Laura served as co-chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property practice group from 2014 to 2023.
