Imad Matini

Overview

Imad Matini is a first-chair trial and appellate litigator who helps clients solve complex, high-stakes legal problems. He has taken numerous matters to trial in state and federal courts across the country and has appeared before a range of state and federal appellate courts.

Imad’s practice focuses on commercial litigation and regulatory compliance. He has handled bet-the-company disputes involving complex business matters, class actions, healthcare, international law, trade secrets, communications, administrative law and a variety of other issues and areas of law. He also regularly leads internal and government investigations from start to finish.

On the regulatory front, Imad advises telecommunications and healthcare companies on compliance, risk mitigation and proactive measures in response to evolving state and federal requirements.

Beyond his legal practice, Imad leads the Diversity and Inclusion Working Group in Sheppard’s Washington, D.C., office and is a member of the firm’s Recruiting and Pro Bono committees. He is also engaged in the broader legal community as an instructor for the DC Bar’s annual course on state and federal procedure.

Prior to joining Sheppard, Imad clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.


Experience
  • Successfully obtained $100-million plus defense verdict for De Tomaso in federal jury trial in New York’s Southern District. Berris v. Choi et al., No. 1:23-cv-04305 (AS), (S.D.N.Y. 2023). 
  • Successfully defended Octo (an IBM company) in multi-jurisdictional litigations by former senior executive, board member, and shareholder, obtaining multiple favorable trial verdicts exceeding $150 million. Seva Holdings, Inc., v. Octo Platform Equity Holdings, LLC, et al., C.A. No. 2022-0437-PRW (Del. Ch. Ct. 2022); Kakar et al., v. Octo Consulting Group, LLC, C.A. No. N22C-01-104-PRW CCLD (Del. Sup. Ct. 2022); Arvinder “Sonny” Kakar v. Mehul Sanghani, et al., CL-2022-00607 (Va. Cir. Ct. 2022); SGS Props. LLC v. Sevatec LLC, f/k/a Sevatec, Inc., CL-2022-00755, (Va. Cir. Ct. 2022); Kakar v. Sanghani, CL-2024-04620 (Va. Cir. Ct. Jan. 2022).
  • Successfully defended Cal AI and its founders against motions for temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction by a former officer and member seeking to unwind sale. Beydoun v. Viral Development, LLC et al., Index No. 650207/2026 (Sup. Ct. N.Y. County).
  • Closed federal criminal billing-fraud investigation of healthcare provider in 18 months with no action.
  • Litigated and first-chaired numerous state and federal trials involving complex commercial and healthcare disputes as well as international entities.
  • Litigated and first-chaired domestic arbitrations involving provider-payor and commercial disputes.
  • Successfully defended client-executives against defamation claims worth over $15 million.
  • Litigated and second-chaired international arbitration held in London, UK, on behalf of global manufacturer.
  • Obtained dismissal of multi-million dollar counterclaims against private equity firm, affiliates, and officers.
  • Obtained dismissal of federal class action worth over $100 million against healthcare client and prevailed on appeal.
  • Represented Korean telecommunications company in federal court, including before the Second Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Secured asylum status for client’s son and reunited him with his family after 15 years apart.
  • Advises clients on global and local compliance with telecommunications and healthcare laws and regulations.
