Overview

Michael Chan advises employers of all types and at different stages of their life cycles on employee benefits and executive compensation matters. Combining over 20 years of experience with deep knowledge of the laws governing employee benefits and compensation arrangements, he helps clients with all aspects of compliance and benefit plan design and implementation. Michael is leader of the Tax, Employee Benefits and Trusts & Estates practice group.

Clients consult with Michael to develop plans aimed at attracting and retaining talent, and that make business sense relative to a company’s size, workforce, industry, growth trajectory and competitive position in the market. Michael works closely with clients to stay abreast of the ever-changing legal landscape so that they can remain in compliance and meet their obligations under the law.

In addition to helping clients design and implement benefit plans and counseling on regulatory compliance, Michael advises on merger, acquisition, finance and other business transactions, including private equity and venture capital investments, to address ERISA-related and other benefits issues.

Michael excels at unpacking complex issues and distilling tax rules and regulations to make them more easily understood. Clients appreciate his ability to listen and collaborate closely with them, navigate situations in which laws and regulations are not clear cut, and devise solutions appropriate to their operations, budget and business realities.

Outside the office, Michael volunteers as a basketball coach, cares for his rescue dogs, and wishes he was better at golf.
