Steve Hollman received the Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland’s 2026 Judge Robert M. Bell Maryland Pro Bono Service Award. Each year, the award is presented to an individual who exemplifies an exceptional commitment to pro bono services, consistently going above and beyond the average pro bono requirements for a minimum of five years.
Hollman’s legal career has been defined by his commitment to pro bono work and the pursuit of justice. Among his many impactful contributions, he represented Trout Unlimited in an environmental case to protect Bristol Bay, Alaska—a critical natural resource that serves as the spawning ground for 40% of the world’s sockeye salmon. Hollman also championed the expansion of absentee voting rights for individuals with print disabilities, including blindness, in West Virginia and Virginia. This groundbreaking work earned Sheppard the 2021 Pro Bono Publico Award from the American Bar Association. Additionally, Hollman collaborated with the ACLU to challenge Washington, D.C.’s emergency response system for individuals experiencing mental health crises. He also represented a grieving family in successfully reopening the investigation into the suspicious death of their loved one.
Hollman will be presented with the award at the Maryland State Bar Association Legal Summit in Ocean City, Maryland, on Friday, June 12, 2026.
