Jupiter Power Receives First-in-Nation Approval for Stacked Energy Storage Project

March 18, 2026Estimated Read Time: 1 min

Shane Early led Sheppard’s successful representation of Jupiter Power (Jupiter) before the Massachusetts Energy Facilities Siting Board, securing an Order that grants full approval for Jupiter to construct its 700 MW / 2,800 MWh Trimount Energy Storage Facility in Everett, Mass (Trimount).

The Order marks the first time that a United States regulator has approved a facility with energy storage enclosures that are vertically stacked on a platform.  During discovery, Jupiter also submitted an alternative design based on new energy storage technology that would put all the energy storage containers on the ground level and all the power conversion systems (PCS) on the platform.  When completed, the facility will provide critical energy and resiliency to support the Boston load pocket, strengthening the ISO-NE energy grid.

Located on the former site of a century-old oil terminal, the site has been under remediation since 2024, and the project will provide an estimated $500 million investment in the city of Everett that will create hundreds of jobs during construction.

Jupiter is a leading developer, owner and operator of battery energy storage systems, with a development pipeline nearing 12,000 MW across the United States.
