A federal jury in Los Angeles unanimously ruled in favor of Jason Derulo and Sony Music Entertainment in a dispute over his hit “Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat),” rejecting claims by guitarist and producer Matthew Spatola that he co-wrote or co-produced the song. Spatola argued that his guitar and bass parts, along with an acoustic section created during April 2020 sessions, entitled him to credit, royalties and a share of ownership in both the composition and sound recording. Derulo countered that Spatola was a hired musician who lacked creative control, accepted a flat fee and did not have any agreement establishing joint authorship.
Derulo’s attorney, Joshua Rosenberg said, “It’s been my honor and privilege to represent Jason Derulo and Sony Music Entertainment in this case. The jury devoted a significant portion of their lives to fulfill their sacred role in determining the outcome, and we thank them for their service."
In addition to Rosenberg, Derulo and Sony Music were represented by Sheppard lawyers Kent Raygor, Allison Wong, Alyssa Stolmack, trial team specialist Vineet Dua and unwavering support from practice specialist Samantha Jackson.
